Synthetic Phonics has been widely acknowledge as the most progressive way for young children to learn the letter sounds and letter shapes in the English language.
English has a complicated ‘code’ for the 26 alphabet letters, meaning that the combinations of letters together can give us many ‘sounds’, approximately 42 to start with!
The method will help children initially listen for the unit of sound in a word, recognise the letter shape and learn how to synthetise sounds , which we call blending and segmenting. This progresses to emerging reading and writing skills.
Understanding the method (what synthetic phonics is) means you can apply it to your existing class materials which may be alphabet based and give you the knowledge to progress to other synthetic phonics programs (a program is a resource/material approach), later on.
